National Agriculture and Project Economist

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is seeking to recruit two suitably qualified and experienced national specialists.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is the lead implementing agency for the European Union (EU) co-funded Programme “Support to Rural Entrepreneurship, Investment and Trade in Papua New Guinea (STREIT PNG)”, which is a Government of Papua New Guinea (GoPNG)/EU/United Nations Joint Programme (UNJP) Partnership.
STREIT PNG is a five-year Programme jointly implemented by EU, GoPNG, FAO, UNDP, UNCDF, ILO and ITU in the Provinces of East and West Sepik with the overall objective to increase sustainable and inclusive economic development of rural areas. The Programme will focus on the cocoa, vanilla and fishery (coastal, riverine and aquaculture) value chains with the specific objectives to: (i) increase economic returns from these value chains; and (ii) strengthen climate resilient and more efficient value chain enablers.

FAO is seeking to recruit for the STREIT PNG Programme two suitably qualified and experienced national specialists for the positions of: (ii) National Agricultural and Project Economist, based in Wewak, East Sepik Province. The two specialists will work under overall supervision of the FAO Programme Coordinator and under technical supervision of the International Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, in close collaboration with other Programme team members.

Key responsibilities

  • Contribute to the effective and timely set up of the project M&E framework to ensure Programme progress and delivery of monitoring in a consultative manner in the Programme area
  • Contribute to the establishment and implementation of the Programme Management System (MIS)
  • Contribute to financial and economic analyses of cocoa, vanilla and fisheries value chains by considering the social, economic, ecological and operational aspects

Job requirements

  • University degree in Agricultural Economics, Economics, Agribusiness or a related discipline;
  • At least three years of appropriate technical experience in the agricultural food security sector
  • Proven experience in financial and economic analysis in the area of agricultural and rural development
  • Knowledge of appropriate data collection methodologies in the agriculture sector
