WCS is now seeking a dynamic, experienced individual with knowledge of marine conservation issues in Papua New Guinea to provide support for its marine conservation program in Papua New Guinea.

The position requires terrestrial ecology and biology expertise as well as reporting and data analysis experience, communication and community engagement skills, and a genuine commitment to the mission of WCS. The role will require long-periods working in the field. The position is based in Kavieng, New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea.

Roles and responsibilities

• Collect and analyse marine biological data and fisheries catch-per-unit-effort data. Biological assessments will include underwater visual census (UVC) monitoring of coral reef fish and benthic communities;
• Assist the Marine Conservation Advisor and other marine team staff with the production of reports – including research – and data analysis;
• Facilitate training programmes in community capacity building, especially concerning sea cucumber and mud crab livelihoods, such as handling and processing techniques, and seaweed farming

Qualifications and experience

• Master’s degree (or at least a minimum of bachelor’s degree) in marine science, fisheries science, coastal zone management, marine resource management or marine conservation;
• Experience in community-based training and education, especially concerning sea cucumber and mud crab handling and processing;
• Have sound knowledge of marine ecology, resource management and coastal zone management, including locally managed marine areas and marine spatial planning;
• Open water SCUBA diving qualifications;
• Prior fieldwork experience, especially for long-term durations;
• Competent with using Microsoft Office, conducting data analysis – especially with large datasets – and writing high quality reports with strict deadlines
