Survey on viability of direct Cairns-Lae flights

Welcome,

Tradelinked Cairns PNG Pacific has recently received funding from the Cairns Regional Council to prepare a business case on the viability of direct air services between Cairns and Lae (see background notes at end of email).

A view of Lae from above.

Tradelinked has engaged the services of Cummings Economics and Compass Research to undertake this work including the preparation of a survey as part of the data gathering to support a business case.  If you, your family, friends, work colleagues or staff travel to and from Lae or intend to in the future, we would really appreciate hearing from you via the survey.

To access the survey click here. The survey itself is quite short and will only take a couple of minutes.

Thank you for your assistance with this project we appreciate and value your input via the survey.

Background notes

Under arrangements with the Government of Papua New Guinea, upgrading of Lae (Nadzab) Airport is to take place with financial support from Japan. The proposed development will take the airport to international standard and is believed will have facilities and services to handle international passengers. The upgrading is expected to be completed in 2020-21.

Cairns is an obvious early target. There are strong business and cultural links between Australia and Morobe Province as the major industrial centre and leading seaport in Papua New Guinea. Cairns International Airport is the closest gateway airport into Australia with direct links to all of Australia’s major metropolitan centres.

Benefits to Cairns

Lae is an official sister city of Cairns and there are strong links between the two communities. Tradelinked believes that the upgrading of Lae Airport provides an opportunity for these links to be further strengthened through the development of direct international air services.

Story continues after advertisment...

The Lae businesses through the Lae Chamber of Commerce and community representatives at a government level are believed to be keen to see direct services developed as part of establishing Lae Airport as a second international gateway to Papua New Guinea.

Substantial benefits will accrue to Cairns. Lae is the second largest city in PNG and the main servicing centre on the northern side of Papua New Guinea including the Highlands region where the majority of THE population is located.

While Port Moresby is a government centre, Lae is the largest industrial and business centre and the leading port in Papua New Guinea.
