Boardroom briefing: Air Niugini alerts Apple users about safety issues, Android adopts new naming conventions, and best companies to work in Australia

Welcome,

Air Niugini alerts MacBook Pro users about faulty batteries, Android simplifies its naming convention for OS and updates its logo, and the best companies to work for in Australia. Readings from around the world on business, leadership and management.

Air Niugini says: Have you checked your MacBook Pro?

Air Niugini’s warning last week about faulty batteries in Apple MacBook Pro laptops caused members of our team to rush to Apple’s support website to check our own gear wasn’t affected.

Fortunately, we’re in the clear, but if you have a Apple MacBook Pro laptop made between September 2015 and February 2017, it could be subject to a recall due to battery issues. As the national airline warns, ‘In general, lithium batteries that are damaged, defective or recalled are not allowed on-board an airplane.’

And, no, placing a Microsoft sticker over the Apple logo on your laptop’s lid is unlikely to be sufficient.

Sweet changes at Android

Bye, bye, Android Pie. Android will stop naming its new OS releases after sweets or desserts, Vice-President of Product Management (Android), Sameer Samat announced in an blog post.

The upcoming version of Android, which will be launched in the coming weeks, will be simply known as Android 10. And all future Android OS updates will use a numbering system, which the company believes is ‘simpler and more intuitive’ for its users.

The change is in response to feedback from the Android community, who have said the names were confusing.

Story continues after advertisment...

New users unfamiliar with the sweet naming conventions found it difficult to check if their devices were running on the latest version of OS. Also, not all tasty treats are equal and what may be a winning flavour or dessert in one country may not be popular or even known in another country. (Yes, we are talking about you Android Froyo).
